Because of this your amygdala sees these thoughts and the panic situation as a threat and so classifies them as "dangerous." You've created a deep seated fear-of-fear.
And the more you think about that particular worry or situation and react anxiously to those thoughts or sensations, the stronger the "danger" tag becomes - now your amygdala is sure that thing or situation is dangerous, so even the slightest connection to that thought can trigger the flight-or-fight response. When this happens adrenline is released causing the sensations of panic: pounding heart, dry throat, tight chest, labored breathing, light-headiness and shakey legs. So now you feel even more anxious.
So you're in a situation of worry causing anxiety, and anxiety causing scary sensations, which creates more anxiety, which creates more anxiety and so on ...before you know it adrenaline is surging through every inch of your body and you are panicking!
"But why can’t I just think logically about the situation and rationalize to prevent panic?" Here’s why…
Habits are powerful things. Repeat anything enough times and your subconscious starts doing it without you having to actually think about it. And this is exactly what happens in most cases of anxiety attacks. It’s become a habit. A very strong and over-bearing habit. And like most deep-seated habits they are tough to break.
